Treatment of your garden furniture

Treatment of your Western Red Cedar, Pine, and Eastern White Cedar garden furniture

Our Western Red Cedar Adirondack chairs, as well as other garden furniture made from Pine and Eastern White Cedar, are delivered untreated by default. While the natural appearance of the wood is beautiful, you can choose to treat the wood with a finish of your choice. Wood oil or stain are excellent choices for treating these types of wood. Wood oil penetrates deeply into the wood and provides a warm look, while stain forms a protective layer on the surface against weather conditions. Other treatment options include varnish or water-repellent sprays. These products also offer protection but may require more maintenance to maintain their effectiveness.

Treatment instructions for your wooden garden furniture

Ensure the wood is clean and dust-free before starting treatment. The wood can also be sanded if necessary; use fine-grit sandpaper for this. Apply the oil or stain with a brush or cloth, and repeat the oil treatment every 1 to 2 years. Stain treatments are generally sufficient every 2 to 3 years, depending on exposure to the elements.

Maintenance and cleaning of your garden furniture

Regular maintenance is important to keep your Western Red Cedar, Pine, and Eastern White Cedar garden furniture in good condition. Use a soft brush or cloth to remove dirt and dust. For stubborn stains, you can use a solution of linseed oil soap and water. Avoid aggressive cleaning agents or pressure washers as they can damage the wood. Ensure the garden furniture is completely dry after cleaning before using it again. By performing regular maintenance and timely treatments, you will continue to enjoy the beauty and comfort of your garden furniture.

Advice on treatment and product selection

For the best results when treating your garden furniture, you can always seek advice from a local paint store. Be sure to read the instructions on the product packaging carefully. A useful tip is to treat a small, inconspicuous area of the wood first to test and avoid disappointment. We recommend products from Cockerije and stains from Wyzonol or Sikkens for excellent finishing and protection.
